The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a toll permit required for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on Austria's motorway and expressway network. This includes passenger cars, motorcycles, campervans up to 3.5 t, and light commercial vehicles. Foreign-registered vehicles are equally subject to the requirement. Vehicles over 3.5 t use the GO-Maut electronic toll system instead.

Yes. Any use of the motorway or expressway network — even for a few kilometres — requires a valid vignette. There is no transit exemption. If you wish to avoid the vignette, you must use federal roads (Bundesstraßen) only, which will significantly increase journey time.

No. Each vignette is valid for one specific vehicle only. Physical stickers are vehicle-specific and cannot be transferred. Digital vignettes are linked to a specific number plate. If you travel with multiple vehicles, each requires its own vignette.

No grace period exists. Once your vignette expires, you are immediately in violation if you use the motorway network. Annual vignettes have a built-in overlap: they are valid from 1 December of the previous year, so you can purchase the new year's vignette in December while the old one is still valid.

Yes, but check with your rental company first. Some rental companies already include a vignette or have their own arrangements. If you purchase a digital vignette for a rental car, ensure you use the exact number plate as shown on the rental agreement. Note that the vignette is non-refundable.

Digital vignettes can be purchased up to 18 days before the desired start date. This allows you to plan ahead and purchase before your trip. The vignette will not be active until the selected start date.

If you enter an incorrect number plate, the vignette will be registered to the wrong vehicle. You will not be covered, and the vehicle you are actually driving may be fined. Contact ASFINAG customer service immediately if you notice an error. Corrections may be possible within a limited window after purchase.

Enforcement officers can issue an on-the-spot fine (Organmandat). For passenger cars, the immediate payment amount is typically €120. If you refuse to pay on the spot or cannot pay, an administrative procedure begins, which can result in fines up to €3,000. In serious cases, vehicle impoundment is possible.

Enforcement is carried out by: (1) automated camera systems at motorway entry points that read number plates and check against the digital vignette database; (2) police officers conducting roadside checks; (3) ASFINAG enforcement staff at service areas and toll points. Both physical stickers and digital registrations are checked.

Yes. If you believe a fine was issued in error, you can file an objection (Einspruch) with the issuing authority within two weeks of receiving the fine notice. No. Electric vehicles are subject to the same vignette requirements as petrol and diesel vehicles. There is no exemption based on vehicle propulsion type. This applies to fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen vehicles.

If you have an annual vignette, it covers all your visits within its validity period (~14 months). If you have a 10-day or 2-month vignette, you need a new one for each visit that falls outside the validity period. Frequent visitors are strongly advised to purchase an annual vignette for cost efficiency.
